Of sub-tropical origins, bell pepper is cultivated during the entire year thanks to the high adaptability to the Mediterranean temperatures. Bell pepper varieties differs in flavour, size and colour. Generally, red pepper, yellow pepper and green pepper are the most common categories on the market, as well as the chilli pepper.
In order to prolong the freshness and taste, it is recommended to preserve the bell peppers into the fridge, using perforated plastic bags.
Christopher Columbus and the peppers
In addition to the discovery of America, Christopher Columbus wrote also about another discover: the “aji”, which were used by the indigenous as if they were black pepper “a real dish with a strong flavour”, by which he was highly fascinated.
August is the month of bell pepper, when this vegetable reaches its maximum taste. There are two great appointments for all the fanatics of bell pepper: The Food Festival in Carmagnola (Turin, Piedmont) and the one in Zero Branco (Treviso, Veneto), which compete for the title of “Best bell pepper festival”.
