Belonging to the same family of cauliflower, broccoli is a variety of Brassica oleracea, very resistant to low temperature. The plant consists of numerous ramifications and buds, that protect the inflorescence, which is dark green or purplish, with a strong flavour.
The inflorescence of broccoli, such as the cauliflower, is protected by leaves. In order to preserve freshness, minerals, and vitamins, it should be placed upside down in a cool and dry place.
Goethe and the broccoli seller
Through the pages of Goethe’s diaries, in his notes taken during a visit in the city of Vicenza in 1786, there’s a sketch representing a woman with a long wooden stick with a basket full of vegetables hanging from it. Probably, she was a seller of a typical specie of broccoli, named “broccolo fiolaro di Creazzo”, an excellence of the territory of Vicenza (Veneto). This type of broccoli is so called for the presence of buds on the stem of the plant (called “fioi” in the dialect of Vicenza). A real delicacy!
January is the month of broccoli. From the Fiolaro broccoli festival of Creazzo (Vicenza, Veneto) to the Broccoli feast in Torbole, you can taste a menu totally dedicate to broccoli, included the dessert.
